Outpatient infusions do save managed care organizations money. When I worked at an outpatient cancer center, the average cost of an in house red blood cell infusion was $1,200. However, if the patient was hospitalized, the average cost was $5,000/night. Providing infusions on an outpatient basis saved our organization at least $3,800. While individual results may vary, the overall consensus is that they do save money.
